Locked, Forced Marriage And Exploited: West Java Police Efforts To Repatriate Reni Rahmawati From Guangzhou

The West Java Regional Police (West Java Police) are trying to repatriate Reni Rahmawati, a resident of Cisaat District, Sukabumi Regency, who is a victim of alleged criminal acts of trafficking in persons (TPPO) in Guangzhou, China.

Head of Public Relations of the West Java Police, Kombes Hendra Rochmawan, said the victim was suspected of having experienced various forms of sexual violence while abroad.

"Currently we are making efforts to help repatriate Reni and uncover a case suspected of being carried out by a TIP syndicate," he said in Bandung, Antara, Wednesday, September 24.

Hendra explained that the West Java Regional Police is now working with a number of relevant agencies, including ministries and international institutions, to ensure protection for victims and take firm action against the perpetrators.

"This case is a serious concern for us because it involves the dignity and safety of Indonesian citizens abroad. The West Java Regional Police and their ranks will not remain silent, we are coordinating with related parties to ensure that victims receive protection," he said.

He explained that this case began in April 2025 when Reni became acquainted with two men with the initials Y and JA through social media. Both offer jobs as household assistants in China with the lure of a salary of Rp. 15 million to Rp. 30 million per month.

The victim was then facilitated to make a passport in Bogor, but after that he was actually accommodated and held captive at the house of someone with the initials A. In this condition, Y and JA contacted a man with the initials L in Jakarta to find a foreign national who was willing to marry Reni.

Reni was finally married in a serial manner to a man in China via video phone call. Not long after that, the victim was dispatched to China and never returned to Indonesia.

Families who lost contact reported to the police in September 2025. The Directorate of General Criminal Investigation of the West Java Police together with the Sukabumi City Police Criminal Investigation Unit then conducted an investigation and coordinated with related agencies.

"From the results of the investigation, it is known that Reni is currently in Guangzhou, China," said Hendra.

He emphasized that his party continues to explore this case, including tracing the roles of actors in Indonesia and abroad, as well as ensuring that the legal process runs thoroughly.
