Sumatran Tiger Mangsa Sapi Warga Di Aceh Timur

BANDA ACEH - Serbajadi Sector Police (Polsek), East Aceh, stated that a Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae) preyed on a cow belonging to a resident in Peunaron Baru Village, Peunaron District, East Aceh Regency.

Serbajadi Police Chief AKP Sudirman said the adult female cows being eaten by protected animals were known to belong to Sadam Husen (37).

"The cow was found dead in an oil palm plantation area owned by PT Agra Bumi Niaga on Saturday (20/9) at around 08.00 WIB. The location of the discovery is about 10 kilometers from residential areas," Sudirman said as quoted by ANTARA, Monday, September 22.

He said the joint team consisted of the police, the Aceh Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA), and the Leuser Conservation Forum (FKL) visited the location where the cattle were found.

"Arriving at the location, the team found a cow with bite marks on the neck and scratches on the back and jaw. This reinforces the suspicion that the resident's cow was a victim of a tiger attack," said AKP Sudirman.

As an anticipatory step, he said, the BKSDA team installed camera traps around the scene to ensure the presence of tigers and monitor their activities.

"BKSDA officers also mentioned that the tiger usually returns to the location of its prey. The camera is important to detect the movement pattern of the animal," he said.

Sudirman appealed to residents, especially livestock owners, not to let pets roam in open areas such as the location where the dead cows were found, especially at night.

"We recommend to livestock owners to take home and ground their pets at night to avoid similar incidents," said Sudirman.
