Coffee Is Hampered Because Of Cigarettes, Study Proves Indra Pencap Doesn't Work Optimally
JAKARTA - For many people, smoking while sipping coffee feels like an inseparable ritual. However, the latest study actually called this combination completely unsuitable, even making the taste of coffee bland.
A study published in the journal Chemosentory Perception found smoking can cause permanent changes to the tongue. This change undermines the ability of taste, especially in detecting bitter tastes that are the main characteristics of coffee.
"Cooks contain toxic substances that make the sense of tapping blunt. As a result, the bitter taste of coffee that should be strong and distinctive, cannot be felt optimally," said a team of researchers from Pitie-Salp HOSPITAL 19, France, quoted from the Independent.co.uk page.
This study involved 451 health workers in Paris who were divided into three groups, namely active smokers, former smokers, and non-smoking smokers. They were tested for their ability to recognize four basic flavors, such as sweet, sour, salty, and bitter.

The results were quite surprising. About 19.8 percent of smokers fail to recognize the bitter taste. This figure is higher in former smokers, which is 26.5 percent. In comparison, only 13.4 percent of non-cigarettes have difficulty distinguishing the bitter taste.
"Implementation of salt, sweet, and acid flavors is not influenced by smoking status. However, for bitter taste, the difference is very significant," the research report wrote.
For coffee lovers, this news is clearly disappointing. The bitter taste of coffee is not just taste, but an important part of the complexity of taste that makes coffee unique.
This means that when someone smokes, they actually can't really enjoy coffee. Interestingly, this research also found that coffee consumption usually decreases after someone quit smoking.
"The relationship between smoking and coffee consumption is strong. But when you stop smoking, coffee consumption actually decreases," said the researchers.
This finding raises the question, do those who feel that they are enjoying cigarettes and coffee at the same time really feel coffee? Or actually they just lose their tongue sensitivity due to cigarettes?
According to scientists, the only way to find out the taste of real coffee is by quitting smoking.
"If you are a smoker, stopping can be a step to return to enjoying coffee with the true taste, complete with a distinctive bitter character." the report concluded.
