2 People Died After The Pillar Of The New Bridge Was Built Collapsed By A Car In Iraq

JAKARTA - At least two people were killed and several others injured as parts of the bridge under construction collapsed in southern Iraq.

Citing AFP, Iraqi authorities said on Sunday 7 September that rescue operations lasted more than 13 hours after the bridge collapsed on Saturday evening local time.

Rescue workers reportedly struggled until changing days to evacuate the victims trapped in the vehicle, under the rubble of the Karbala-Baghdad route bridge.

Civil Defense Agency Karbala said it had "reduced seven people and found two bodies" from beneath the collapsed structure.

A health official in Karbala added that at least six people were injured on Saturday night, including those from Syria and Afghanistan.

All injured victims were taken to a nearby hospital in Karbala, where Shia pilgrims from other countries often travel to visit holy places.

The health official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that "the bridge's pillars collapsed as several vehicles passed under him."
