BPOM Finds 18 Illegal Natural Materials And Supplements That Hazard Health

JAKARTA - The Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM) has again revealed the circulation of traditional natural medicinal products (OBA) and illegal health supplements (SK) containing illegal medicinal chemicals (BKO).

This finding came from the results of intensive supervision during July 2025, with details of 16 OBA products and 2 SK products. Of these, 9 OBA products do not have a distribution permit number (NIE), 6 products include fake distribution license numbers, and 3 products have canceled NIE.

Supervision was carried out through a series of sampling and laboratory testing activities on 1,680 samples of OBA, quasi medicine, and SK circulating in the market. In addition to sampling in the field, BPOM also explores the distribution and production facilities of these products.

The test results show eight illegal OBA products containing BKO in the form of sildenafil, tadalafil, or nortadalafil, which are claimed to increase male stamina and vitality.

Six other products contain desametason, paracetamol, klorfeniramin maleat, or sodium klofenak with claims to overcome sore linu. Two OBA products contain cyproheptadin which is claimed to increase appetite, while two SK products contain melatonin with claims to maintain health.

Laboratory testing revealed that sildenaphiles were added to several products without distribution permits to provide instant effects. The head of BPOM RI, Taruna Ikrar, stressed that this is very risky, because the use of sildenas without medical supervision can cause heart problems, blood pressure is unstable, to death.

In addition, two decrees containing melatonin do not clearly include the content and do not have an official distribution permit. Melatonin is a hormone that is naturally produced by the body, especially in the penalty gland, and plays a role in regulating the sleep-building cycle.

In the pharmaceutical world, melatonin is used to overcome certain sleep disturbances, not as an addition to natural products based on natural ingredients. Taruna Ikrar expressed concern over the rampant circulation of illegal products.

"The addition of BKO in products that should be based on natural ingredients is a form of serious violation that endangers public health," he said, quoted from the official BPOM website.

The cadets say these products are often claimed to be herbal herbs or herbal supplements, even though they contain drug active substances that can cause dangerous side effects if consumed without medical supervision. Drug chemicals are absolutely not allowed or prohibited from being added to natural ingredients.

"Similarly, melatonin, if used without proper supervision and dose, risks causing disturbances in vulnerable groups such as children, pregnant women, and the elderly," he continued.

As a firm step, BPOM submitted cases of business actors who added BKO illegally to law enforcement officials. Perpetrators can be subject to criminal sanctions in accordance with Article 435 Jo. Article 138 paragraph (2) and (3) Law Number 17 of 2023 concerning Health, with a threat of imprisonment of up to 12 years or a maximum fine of 5 billion rupiah.

BPOM also urges the public to always check whether the product purchased has NIE or is officially registered. Avoid buying OBA or SK from unofficial sources, be aware of products that promise quick results, and stop using products that are declared to contain BKO. The public is expected to actively report the circulation of suspicious products through the official BPOM website.

"We invite all elements of society to become smart consumers. By becoming smarter and wiser consumers, people play an active role in maintaining personal and family health, as well as helping prevent the circulation of illegal and harmful products in the market." concluded the Head of BPOM.
