India Flood Kills 29 People, Thousands Of Residents Evacuated

JAKARTA - A total of 29 people were killed and thousands more displaced when heavy rains in the rainy season triggered heavy flooding in Myanmar, northern India.

The head of the army minister, Bhagwant Mann, said the area was currently facing one of the worst flood disasters in decades, with water submerging about 1,000 villages, triggering the evacuation of 16,000 people.

High rainfall and overflowing dam water have caused large-scale damage to seven districts ofTEN.

Government officials said as many as 300,000 hectares of agricultural land, especially rice fields, were flooded, thus damaging the harvest which will take place in a few weeks.

In addition, educational institutions suspended activities until September 3 because the rain was still continuing.

Meanwhile, India's army, air and volunteer organizations were involved in an all-time rescue and rescue operation, which was described as "war preparedness" by public broadcaster All India Radio.

The efforts made include evacuation, distribution of aid, and provision of medical assistance to those trapped.

The monsoon rains in recent weeks have brought disaster, causing sudden rain, flash floods and landslides in several areas in northern India. Heavy rains usually started in India in June and ended in September.

In Himachal Pradesh, authorities confirmed the death toll reached 320 on Monday, with additional deaths reported in Uttarakhand due to landslides and rain-related incidents.

India's Ministry of Home Affairs has announced the deployment of a central team between ministries to assess damage to all affected areas, including due to floods, cloudbursts, and landslides.
