Doctor Affirms PH Water Is Not Useful To Overcome GERD

JAKARTA - So far, circulating in the pH water community (generally high) is considered to be able to help overcome GERD or stomach acid reflux disease. PH water is a measure that shows the acidity level or the freedom of a solution, including water.

PH water below 7 is acidic, while above 7 it is alkaline (alkali). PH water above 7 is often considered to be able to help overcome GERD, but the doctor insists that this is not true.

"PH water, frankly, from the start I consistently said that this is useless," Chairman of the Executive Board of the Indonesian Gastroenterology Association (PB PGI), Prof. Ari Fahrial Syam, when met in the SCBD area, Jakarta, on Thursday, August 14, 2025.

Professor Ari said that drinking high pH water would not give much change to GERD's condition. Instead of drinking pH water, it is better to drink an antad.

Antasida is an alkali cydat substance that can neutralize stomach acid. This drug has long been used in the world of medicine to treat diseases related to stomach acid.

"The air pH 7 to 8, meeting pH 1 and 2 also doesn't change much. It's the same as drinking antation, the antation is a base for him. It's the same as drinking water and bases," he explained.

Not only that, Professor Ari also emphasized that until now there has been no research stating the use of pH water to overcome GERD. Therefore, people with GERD are advised not to trust it and do the treatment recommended by the doctor.

"So I don't think there are many benefits (pH water), it's just made as if it's useful (for GERD). There's also nothing in any paper or journal that says pH water treats GERD, nothing," concluded Professor Ari.
