PSG Doesn't Deserve To Win UEFA Super Cup

JAKARTA - Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) coach Luis Enrique said his team did not deserve to win the UEFA Super Cup (UEFA Super Cup) after they bounced back dramatically in stoppage time to beat Tottenham Hotspur on penalties on Thursday, August 14, 2025.

Nuno Mendes scored a decisive goal on penalties to complete PSG's seemingly impossible revival when Tottenham took a 2-0 lead until the 85th minute of normal time in the annual match between the Champions League champions and the Europa League.

Luis Enrique said that the fitness levels of the two different teams were clear. His team just continued training after reaching the 2025 World Cup Club final last month.

"For 80 minutes we didn't deserve that. I think Tottenham deserved to win the game because they were in the best form. They trained for six weeks and played a great game."

"We've only been training for six days, but sometimes football feels unfair. I have to admit, we were very lucky to have scored two goals in the last 10 minutes," Luis Enrique told TNT Sports.

Lee Kang-in gave PSG hope by reducing the gap with a powerful shot from outside the penalt box. Meanwhile, another substitute, Goncalo Ramos, equalized in the fourth minute of injury time to change the position to 2-2 at Stadio Friuli, Udine.

In fact, after that, Tottenham managed to turn things around with a 2-0 lead on penalties after Vitinha missed a penalty for PSG.

However, Micky van de Ven and Mathies Tel failed to execute penalties for Spurs and PSG managed to execute four consecutive penalties.

"My players still believe until the last minute, so do our supporters," said Luis Enrique.

Meanwhile, Lucas Chevalier made an extraordinary debut for PSG. The goalkeeper has just joined from Lille and replaced Gianluigi Donnarumma - who many consider the world's best goalkeeper.

Chevalier was unlucky that he conceded Tottenham's opener in the 39th minute -- had pulled out Joao Palhinha's shot until it hit the crossbar, but Van de Ven reacted quickly and threw the ball into the net.

However, he was to blame for the second goal after failing to ward off the newly appointed Tottenham captain Cristian Romero's header in the 48th minute.

Chevalier closed the match by saving Van de Ven's penalty on penalties, a decisive victory that Donnarumma often played.

"It shows a strong personality, which is very important if you want to stay at a club like PSG because there is a lot of pressure around us."

"However, I am very happy for him because it shows a strong personality," said Enrique.

Appreciation for Chevalier's performance was also expressed by PSG midfielder, Vitinha.

"That's the real definition of a team because once someone fails, you have to help your partner bounce back and we still win."

"That's really amazing because other days someone else will fail and someone will rise," Vitinha said.
