TikTok Launches Footnotes In The US, A Check Feature Similar To Elon Musk's

JAKARTA TikTok announced the launch of Footnotes, a crowd-sourced-based check feature similar to the Community Records feature. This feature has just been launched for users in the US.

"US users in the Footnotes trial program can start writing and assessing leg records on short videos, and our US community will start seeing videos that are considered useful and will also judge them," TikTok said, quoted on Thursday, July 31.

Footnotes was first announced in April 2025. The concept of assessment is not much different from Community Records on platform X, where contributors will judge whether the videos circulating on TikTok are in line with what is being discussed.

Basically, this feature works like checking the authenticity or correctness of content with human support. This feature uses a bridging algorithm that aims to find consensus among users who have different views.

If some contributors think that a note is useful, most likely the record is accurate. The method is also designed to prevent brigade efforts by one party.

TikTok believes that the launch of Footnotes can help users better understand content on the platform. Notes can add important information and contexts so users can avoid disinformation and misinformation.

"Footnotes build on our extensive efforts to maintain platform integrity with content labels, search banners, and a global fact-checking program that helps people understand content reliability and access trusted sources," TikTok said.

TikTok has opened registration for contributors since last April. Contributors must be at least 18 years old, have been using TikTok for more than six months, and have no history of Community Standard Violations. To date, nearly 80,000 US users have met the requirements as Footnotes contributors.
