Lebanon Sentences Dead Men Killing UN UN Peace Soldiers UNIFIL From Ireland
JAKARTA - The Lebanese court sentenced a man to death in absence of a man convicted of killing a UN peacekeeper or UNIFIL from Ireland on Tuesday 29 July.
Citing AFP, Tuesday, July 29, the soldier named Sean Rooney, 23 years old, died after a UNIFIL troop convoy was attacked on December 14, 2022, in southern Lebanon.
In the attack, three UN temporary forces in Lebanon were injured.
A court official who requested anonymity for not being authorized to provide information to the media, said the Lebanese Military Court issued its ruling in the case on Monday midnight.
"The court sentenced the main defendant, Mohammad Ayyad," the official said, adding that the decision was issued in a absentia manner.
Separately, a security source said December 2022 that Hezbollah had handed Ayyad over to the Lebanese military in June 2025.
However, Ayyad was released from custody in November 2023 on the grounds of health factors so that he continued to be absent from the court hearing that ensnared his name.
