President Trump Says 'BRICS Anti-American Policy' Will Cause An Additional 10 Percent Tariff
JAKARTA - United States President Donald Trump on Sunday said countries aligning with BRICS' "anti-American policy" would be subject to an additional 10 percent tariff.
"Every country that aligns itself with the Anti-American BRICS policy, will be subject to an ADDITIONAL 10% Tariff. There will be no exceptions for this policy. Thank you for your attention to this issue!" President Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.
However, President Trump did not clarify or expand the reference "Anti-American policy" in his posts.
It is known that BRICS is holding a summit in Rio de Janeiro on July 6-7. Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto attended this meeting, after Indonesia was fully accepted as a member in January 2025.
In a joint statement on Sunday, the leaders present supported plans to pilot the BRICS Multilateral Guarantee initiative in the group's New Development Bank, to lower financing costs and increase investment in member countries, Reuters first reported last week.
Last year, BRICS said it was preparing a major step in the international payment system, to provide more self-contained options to reduce the dependence of Western-based payment systems, such as SWIFT, which are dominated by the US dollar.
In December, Trump, then elected president, threatened to impose a 100 percent tariff on BRICS countries if they did not cancel plans to use alternative currencies other than the US dollar.
"The idea of BRICS countries trying to stay away from the Dollars, while we just remain silent and supervise, IT'S TOO MUCH," Trump wrote on Truth Social.
"We need the commitment of these countries that they will not create a new BRICS Currency, or support other currencies to replace the powerful US Dollar Currency," Trump said.
He stressed that any country seeking to replace the US dollar in international trade would "say goodbye to America".
In response, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Pankin said BRICS was actually working on a payment system instead of creating a new international currency, quoted from RIA.
The threat of imposing 100 percent import duty on countries that are trying to weaken the dollar expressed by US President-elect Donald Trump, has not stopped working on the BRICS economic group payment system.
"Of course, it will continue," he said, referring to the planned system work.
In February, President Trump said BRICS' efforts to weaken dollars could have a serious impact on America and the world.
"It will be something terrible for our country. It will be bad for the world. They want to weaken the dollar. Six countries gather. They want to weaken the dollar," Trump told reporters at the White House citing Sputnik.
It is known, BRICS was founded in 2009 by Brazil, Russia, India and China. The bloc then added South Africa and last year included Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates as members. This is the first summit of leaders to include Indonesia.

More than 30 countries have expressed interest in participating in BRICS, both as full members and partners.
