The Deputy Minister Of Social Affairs Affirms That People's Schools Are Not Military-Style Education
JAKARTA - Deputy Minister of Social Affairs Agus Jabo Priyono emphasized that People's Schools are not military-style educational institutions, but character and disciplinary educational institutions designed to reach children from underprivileged families.
"Military education is not here. This is character education, not military-style education," Agus said after closing the first phase of the People's School Principal's retreat at the Arhanud 1/Faletehan Regiment Headquarters, Jakarta, Friday, June 20, as reported by ANTARA.
He explained that the use of military facilities in retret activities was solely due to suitability in establishing the discipline and responsibility of prospective school principals.
Therefore, cooperation with the military is carried out to support the formation of strong characters, not to implement military doctrine.
"Indeed, those who have unity, discipline, and the needs of the army, yes, we collaborate. But if you call this military education, I clarify that it is not true," he said.
The first phase of the People's School Principal's Retret takes place from 16 - 20 June 2025 and is attended by 53 participants, one of whom is absent because he is performing the pilgrimage.
The materials provided during the activity included the introduction of the concept of the People's School, character strengthening, and disciplinary training. This retreat activity was carried out in two locations, namely the Ministry of Social Education and Training Center and the Arhanud 1/Faletehan Regiment complex of Kodam Jaya.

The Deputy Minister of Social Affairs expressed his appreciation to the TNI, and a number of other partners who have supported the implementation of these activities.
He hopes that the character of the principal who will lead the People's School must prioritize empathy and partiality to the children of vulnerable groups after participating in a retreat at the military barracks.
These school principals are agents of change. They will deal directly with children who may have experienced trauma or social pressure in the past. So they must have a big heart, be full of empathy, and be able to be guides," said Agus.
