Amazon Disburses IDR 220 Trillion Investment For Data Center Infrastructure In Australia

JAKARTA - Amazon announced plans to invest 20 billion Australian dollars or around Rp220 trillion from 2025 to 2029 to expand, operate and maintain its data center infrastructure in Australia.

It is the largest global technology investment in Australian history, and will support growing demand for cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI), accelerating AI adoption and capability, as well as modernizing organizations across Australia.

"This investment strengthens our long-term commitment to supporting the growth and development of organizations in Australia on a large scale, as well as helping them take advantage of the great opportunities offered by generative AI," said Amazon Web Services (AWS) CEO Matt Garman in an announcement on his official blog.

This new investment is the sustainability of AWS' commitment to Australia, which began in 2012 with the launch of the AWS Asia Pacific (Sydney) region.

Even from 2020 to 2022, Amazon has invested around 467 million Australian dollars (IDR 5.14 trillion) in its renewable energy project in Australia.

In 2024, Amazon will be Australia's third-largest renewable energy buyer of the corporate, and remains the world's largest renewable energy buyer.

"This is the largest investment our country has ever received from global technology providers, and it is a great opportunity for Australia to build AI capabilities with secure and resilient infrastructure," said Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

To support the expansion of this local cloud infrastructure, Amazon will also invest in three new solar power fields in Victoria and Queensland, which will provide a combined capacity of more than 170 megawatts, managed by European Energy.

Combined with eight other renewable energy projects, Amazon will have 11 clean energy projects in Australia, which are expected to generate more than 1.4 million megawatt hours of carbon-free energy per year, enough to supply around 290,000 households in Australia.
