Iran Executes 9 ISIS Members

JAKARTA - Iran executed nine people known as ISIS members after their arrests in early 2018 during clashes that killed three members of the Revolutionary Guard.

Nine detainees, whose citizenship is not mentioned, have been accused of "moharebeh" - an Islamic term that means fighting against God - armed rebellion and possession of weapons of war.

As reported by Reuters on Tuesday, June 10, state media said they were part of a team of several ISIS fighters tracked by the Revolutionary Guard after crossing Iran's western border with the aim of carrying out attacks on Iran's territory.

The arrests came months after ISIS' deadly attack on Iran's parliament in Tehran and the tomb of Islamic Republic founder Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

Although the threat of ISIS attacks on Iraq and Syria has declined significantly since the group's defeat, Iran recently experienced a deadly attack from the ISIS branch in Afghanistan.

According to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the number of people executed in Iran will increase to 901 by 2024, the highest number since 2015.
