Lapan: Supermoon Causes Maximum Tides In The Sea

JAKARTA - Head of the National Aeronautics and Space Agency (Lapan) Thomas Djamaluddin said the supermoon or purnama perige (the nearest full moon) can cause maximum tides in the sea.

"There will be no significant impact, apart from the maximum tide in the sea, if it is not accompanied by bad weather at sea," Thomas said as quoted by Antara, Tuesday, April 27.

The supermoon or full moon perigee (closest full moon) occurs at night on April 27. The current month in perige occurs at 22.22 western Indonesia time.

According to Thomas, if it is accompanied by high waves in the sea, the maximum tide will result in tidal flooding which will spill further into the coastal area.

Based on information from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), when the full moon perigee occurs, the size of the moon becomes 14 percent larger than when the full moon apogee. The brightness will also be 30 percent brighter than when the full moon apogee.
