Trump-Zelenskyy Relations Crack, America Reportedly Rejects Sponsory' UN Resolution On Russian 3-Year Invasion
JAKARTA - The United States refuses to participate in supporting the UN resolution draft that marks three years since Moscow's invasion of Ukraine supports Kyiv's territorial integrity and condemns Russian aggression
This was reported exclusively by Reuters citing three diplomatic sources reported Thursday, February 20.
The move seems to reflect a growing rift between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump, who is trying to end the war in Ukraine quickly.
Trump's envoy has held talks with Russia without Kyiv's involvement that sparked Zelenskyy's anger.
This dispute is a major political crisis for Ukraine, which has used US military aid worth tens of billions of dollars agreed under the previous US administration to deal with the Russian invasion and has also benefited from diplomatic support.
The UN General Assembly's draft resolution, seen by Reuters, condemns Russian aggression and reaffirms its commitment to Ukraine's sovereignty, independence, territorial unity and integrity within internationally recognized limits.
"In previous years, the United States has consistently sponsored these resolutions to support fair peace in Ukraine," said one source, who also asked not to be named to discuss sensitive issues, on Thursday.
The first diplomatic source told Reuters the resolution was sponsored by more than 50 countries and declined to identify these countries.
A spokesman for the US diplomatic mission to the United Nations in Geneva did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Russia has seized about 20% of Ukraine's territory and slowly but surely controls territory in the east. Moscow says its special military operation' is a response to the existential threat posed by Kyiv's efforts to become a NATO member.
Ukraine and Western countries refer to Russia's actions as land grabbing by imperialists.
The United States has been one of the sponsors of nearly all UN resolutions that supported Ukraine against Russia during Europe's biggest conflict since the Second World War.
It is not yet clear when the deadline for supporting the draft resolution will end, and Washington may still change its mind.

Voting at the United Nations, which is seen as determining global support for Ukraine in the face of changes in the attitude of the Trump administration towards Russia in the war, could still run without US support.
However, it is unlikely to get broad support at the General Assembly.
A second diplomatic source who also asked not to be named said: "For now, the situation is they (US) will not sign it."
Efforts are underway to seek support from other countries, including South countries.
