Maintain Independence, Government Cancels Mining IUP To Universities

JAKARTA - Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Bahlil Lahadalia ensured that universities were not given permission to manage mines as previously proposed.

Bahlil said, this aims to maintain and appreciate campus independence.

"We are from the government after seeing developments, reviewing in respecting, maintaining campus independence, so there is no direct gift to the campus," Bahlil said as quoted on Tuesday, February 18.

Bahlil said that WIUP would actually be given to State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN), Regional Owned Enterprises (BUMD), and other business entities.

"However, in its implementation these companies, both BUMN and BUMD and these companies, if they have the desire to worship, provide research funds, create laboratories, provide scholarships to campuses that need it, there is no problem," continued Bahlil.

Nevertheless, Bahlil said that the provision of facilities to universities was not a mandatory requirement for SOEs to BUMDs to be able to obtain IUPs.

Bahlil said the government is also considering universities that do not want to benefit from mining management.

"But the principle is that there are two different things between campuses and the company's obligation to provide scholarships, that's for those who want it, not all campuses want to accept that, right," explained Bahlil.

Providing mining benefits to universities is also one of the substances in the Minerba Law which was approved today through the Plenary Meeting, namely the provision of funding for universities from part of the profits in the management of WIUP and WIUPK in a priority way to BUMN, BUMD or private business entities in order to increase the independence of education services and higher education excellence.
