Sales Of Indonesian Cars Are Getting More Nyungsep, Losing To Malaysia-Singapore

Minister of Industry (Menperin) Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said the number of car sales in Indonesia continued to decline. Including records in early 2025.

Agus said car sales in Indonesia fell by 11.3 percent in January 2025 compared to last December 2024.

"Based on the report of the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo), wholesale car sales (producers to dealers) in January 2025 decreased 11.3 percent on an annual basis (yoy)," Agus said in a written statement quoted on Friday, February 14.

The number of car sales throughout 2024 was recorded at 866,000 units.

Agus said that this number also decreased by 13.9 percent compared to the previous year.

"Throughout 2024 sales in wholesale only 866,000 units or decreased by 13.9 percent compared to 2023," he said.

In responding to the weakening purchasing power of the car, he hopes that new breakthroughs will be made by stakeholders.

The government, according to Agus, does not remain silent by providing incentives in the form of economic stimulus.

"Of course, with the sluggish market conditions, we all stakeholders including the government need to look for breakthroughs so that consumers can return or have an interest in automotive spending," said Agus.

In addition, Agus revealed, the ratio of car ownership in Indonesia is much lower than in other countries. From a business perspective, this opens up great opportunities.

He tried to compare it to several other countries.

Starting from Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Japan to Australia.

As a result, the ratio of car ownership in Indonesia is much lower.

"The government continues to encourage the ratio of car ownership. This is because the ratio of car ownership in Indonesia is still considered very low," he said.

The Minister of Industry explained that there are 490 Malaysian residents of cars per 1,000 people with a population of around 60 million.

Thailand recorded 211 units per 1,000 people. Singapore is 211 units per 1,000 people.

"Indonesia ratios of car ownership 99 units per 1,000 people, 99 units per 1,000 people," he added.

Agus said that his party welcomed the 2025 Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS). Moreover, the presence of new brands at the annual exhibition event.

"We hope that the presence of these new brands can expand the automotive market in Indonesia," he concluded.
