Garbage Starts Mounting, KLH Seals Caringin Market TPS Bandung

BANDUNG - The Ministry of Environment (KLH) sealed and stopped activities at the Caringin Market Temporary Disposal Site (TPS), Bandung, after finding a number of violations, including not having environmental documents.

The Director of Administrative Sanctions at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Ari Prasetia, said that the action was taken after a public complaint regarding the accumulation and hoarding of waste had a negative impact on the environment.

"So this with the Bandung City Government also issued administrative sanctions to make environmental documents in all market areas and how to process the waste," said Ari in Bandung, quoted from Antara, Monday, January 10.

Ari said that apart from not having environmental documents, KLH also found that the garbage burning site through the incinerator at the TPS also did not have a operating permit.

"There are no environmental documents, there is no environmental agreement. This is again their process of being subject to administrative sanctions because they do not have environmental approval and environmental documents," he said.

Furthermore, he said that with the closing of the TPS, the Caringin Market manager was not allowed to dispose of garbage in the front area of the market.

Because, he continued, there is no permit to allow managers to throw garbage here because they must first complete environmental documents with the Bandung City Government.

"The hoarding here is not in accordance with the waste management according to the rules. We will continue legally, yes, meaning that there may be an investigation later," he said.

According to him, the manager of the Caringin Market has violated Law Number 18 of 2008 concerning waste management because it does not follow the rules.

"So after being given administrative sanctions by the Bandung City DLH, the manager of the Carigin Market must fix all of this," he said.

Previously, the Head of the Bandung City Environment Agency (DLH), Dudy Prayudi, emphasized that waste management in Caringin Market is the full responsibility of the private sector.

Dudy said market managers must separate organic and inorganic waste from their sources, transport it to TPS, and manage the residue to the Final Disposal Site (TPA).

"Pasar Caringin is a private market, so the manager is obliged to handle waste according to the rules," said Dudy.
