Foreign Minister Sugiono Encourages Thorough Investigation Of The Shooting Of Indonesian Citizens By Malaysian Officials
JAKARTA - Foreign Minister Sugiono regretted the death of an Indonesian citizen (WNI) in a shooting incident carried out by Malaysian officials, prompting a thorough investigation into the incident.
Officials from the Malaysian Maritime Power Strengthening Agency (APMM) shot a ship in the waters of Tanjung Rhu, Selangor on January 24, 2025, at around 03.00 am local time.
The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that the shooting was carried out after ship passengers were suspected of resisting. This incident caused one Indonesian citizen to die and four others were injured.
"The Indonesian Foreign Minister regrets the loss of Indonesian citizens in a shooting incident by APMM (Agensi Pengguasian Maritime Malaysia)," wrote the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Monday, January 27.
Foreign Minister Sugiono also expressed his deep condolences to the families of the victims for the death of one Indonesian citizen and also to the other victims who were injured in the shooting incident, the ministry said.
"The Indonesian Foreign Minister is pushing for a thorough investigation into the shooting incident carried out by the APMM, including the alleged existence of an exercise use of force," explained the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs together with the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur continue to handle and follow developments, as well as provide consular and legal assistance, in order to ensure the fulfillment of the rights of Indonesian citizens in the legal system in Malaysia.
Today, the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur has received information from the Malaysian Royal Police (PDRM) that Indonesian citizens who died with the initials B, from Riau Province, can be repatriated after completing the autopsy process. The Indonesian Embassy will carry out all procedures for curing corpses, as well as facilitating repatriation to their area of origin.

As for the four Indonesian citizens who were injured, the Indonesian Embassy received information that they had received treatment at the hospital and their condition is currently stable. The Indonesian Embassy has gained consular access to meet them on Wednesday, the ministry said.
Responding to this incident, the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur immediately took steps to ensure protection for affected Indonesian citizens and sent a diplomatic note to the Malaysian side to encourage a thorough investigation, including highlighting the possibility of excessive use of force.
