BMKG Warns Potential High Waves In The North Sulawesi Sea As High As 2.5 Meters
JAKARTA - Natural disasters, including high waves and extreme weather, are a big challenge that the community must watch out for, especially for those living in coastal areas.
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued an early warning regarding the potential for high waves that could reach 2.5 meters in several waters of North Sulawesi.
"BMKG has issued an early warning regarding wave height until January 30, 2025," said BMKG Coordinator for Observation and Information at the Bitung Maritime Meteorology Station, Ricky D Aror, in Manado, as quoted by ANTARA.
In general, the wind in the region is expected to blow from west to north with speeds between 2 and 20 knots.
Water areas that have the potential to experience high waves between 1.25 and 2.5 meters (medium) include Sitaro Islands Regency and North Minahasa Regency. In addition, the southern waters of North Sulawesi, Sangihe Islands Regency, and Talaud Islands are also at risk of experiencing larger waves.

Ricky reminded the public, especially shipping players, to be more careful with the potential for high waves. "Nelayans must pay attention to wind speeds that exceed 15 knots and wave heights that are more than 1.25 meters," he added. Likewise for barges, where wind speeds of more than 16 knots and waves of more than 1.5 meters can increase the risk of shipping.
Meanwhile, for ferries, wind speeds that exceed 21 knots and waves above 2.5 meters can threaten safety. In fact, large ships such as cargo ships or cruises need to be aware of wind speeds above 27 knots and waves of more than 4.0 meters.
BMKG hopes that with this early warning, people, especially those who are active in the sea, can anticipate potential hazards that can occur due to high waves.
