Batam Customs Thwarts The Smuggling Of Hundreds Of Used Cellphones To Jakarta

The Batam Customs Office thwarted the smuggling of 100 used cell phones carried by an airline passenger from Hang Nadim Batam Airport to Jakarta via Soekarno-Hatta Airport, Tangerang, Banten.

"The suspect has the initials YT, the case is currently in the process of being investigated," said Batam Customs Office Head Zaky Firmansyah in his statement in Batam, Riau Islands, Monday, January 13.

He explained that the suspect YT was a passenger of one of the airlines who was about to depart from Hang Nadim Batam Airport to Soekarno-Hatta Airport during the surge in the flow of Christmas and New Year's homecoming on December 29, 2024.

The suspect, he said, was suspected of carrying hundreds of cell phones (cell phones) in the goods he was carrying so that further research was carried out.

The Hang Nadim Customs Team identified a suspicious passenger carrying an empty suitcase in a backpack which was then taken to an unnamed souvenir shop in the A8 waiting room.

Suspicious this, the officer then examined the passenger carrying the suitcase and found hundreds of cellphones.

"On the results of the examination, action was taken in the form of affirmation and sealing of the suitcase brought," he said.

The suspect is indicated to have violated Law Number 17 of 2006 concerning Amendments to Law Number 10 of 1995 concerning Customs Article 102 letter f and violates Government Regulation Number 41 of 2021 concerning the Implementation of Free Trade Areas and Free Ports.

The threat is a minimum imprisonment of 1 (one) year and a maximum imprisonment of 10 years and a maximum fine of Rp. 50,000,000.00 (fifty million rupiah) and a maximum of Rp. 5 billion.

Zaky appealed to the public to always comply with the provisions related to passenger luggage. Batam Customs will always take firm action against all forms of customs violations committed by prospective passengers.

"For people who find allegations/indications of violations of customs provisions, please convey the information to us so that the truth of the information can be followed up," said Zaky.
