Accommodated In Tengan Pemukiman, 832 Rohingya Refugees In Pekanbaru Are Planned To Be Moved
RIAU - Pekanbaru City Government (Pemkot) proposed the transfer of 832 Rohingya refugees to Palas Village, Rumbai Barat District.
Acting Head of the National and Political Unity Agency (Kesbangpol) of Pekanbaru City, Hadi Sanjoyo, said that the transfer due to the current condition of the refugee's residence was deemed inappropriate and located in the middle of residential areas.
"We have submitted this transfer proposal to the 'International Organization for Migration' (IOM)," he said in Pekanbaru, Riau Province, Thursday, January 9, which was confiscated by Antara.
Hadi explained that his party was still waiting for approval from the central IOM regarding the proposed transfer. If the proposal is approved, then the transfer process will be carried out immediately.
Pekanbaru City Government has identified several potential locations for relocation, but Palas Village is considered the most appropriate location based on various considerations.
"We chose Palas Village for several reasons, including the availability of land that is quite wide and far from the center of the crowd," said Hadi.

Regarding the number of Rohingya refugees in Pekanbaru, Hadi mentioned that there were two large groups. The first group numbered 277 people who were previously placed in guesthouses, while the second group numbered 555 people who were placed behind the Immigrant Detention House (Rudenim), Jalan Sudirman.
The transfer of Rohingya refugees is expected to provide better living conditions for them. In addition, relocation is also expected to reduce the potential for social conflict with the surrounding community.
"We hope that this transfer can be a long-term solution to the Rohingya refugee problem in Pekanbaru," said Hadi.
