Is Sunscreen Powder Effective in Protecting Skin? This is the Explanation From the Experts
YOGYAKARTA – Sunscreen protects the skin from UV exposure. Basically, powder sunscreen is formulated into a powder containing SPF. In addition to being makeup, it also acts as skincare that keeps the skin in prime condition. Including easy to apply and also protects hard-to-reach skin areas that are usually different in color after exposure to the sun.
But does this sunscreen powder really protect the skin effectively? Powder sunscreen is easy to apply and resembles a texture like loose powder. Most formulas are equipped with a built-in brush for easy application. Board-certified dermatologist Shari Marchbein, MD., explains that sunscreen powder often comes in loose form with a retractable brush or in solid form. This sunscreen powder is very light, making it perfect for use in summer because it can make the skin look matte, is easy to use over makeup and for reapplication, and is not heavy like creams or lotions.
However, it should be noted that the effectiveness of sunscreen depends on the quantity rather than the SPF number listed. Powder sunscreens provide quick protection. But if you apply sunscreen as a first-time application, it won’t be as effective. That’s because powder sunscreens need to be reapplied or touched up every two hours after you first apply sunscreen in general. When it comes to efficacy, Marchbein says traditional creams and lotions tend to have the best coverage.
The recommendation for sunscreen is to apply it before makeup and reapply it over makeup every two hours. That’s where spray and powder sunscreens come in, because they’re best for reapplication, not the primary use for sun protection.
"... both are less effective than topical creams or lotions because of their lower ability to absorb into the skin or on the surface and create a barrier. Plus, their SPF is often lower than most topical creams, meaning you need to apply them more often to get true 'complete' protection," explains board-certified cosmetic dermatologist Jason Emer, MD. reported by Byrdie, Monday, December 23.
Well, although it is not recommended as the main protection for the skin from sun exposure. But sunscreen powder will not ruin your makeup. Powder sunscreen is also made from ingredients that are ideal for sensitive skin. Emer and Marchbein suggest using a broad-spectrum sunscreen formula, including sunscreen powder.
Look for a powder sunscreen formula that contains titanium or zinc but choose one that is chemical-free and physically blocks and does not irritate the skin. Ingredients to look for include ceramide 3 and olive glycerides for hydration. As well as antioxidants, vitamin E, and vitamin C for anti-aging properties and to help fight free radicals.
