Iran's Minister Of Law And Ambassador Discuss Opportunities For The Transfer Of Iranian Prisoners

JAKARTA - Minister of Law (Menkum) Supratman Andi Agtas received an honorary visit from the Iranian Ambassador to Indonesia Mohammad Boroujerdi to discuss the possibility of moving Iranian prisoners (prisoners) from Indonesia.

The discussion was based on questions from the Iranian Ambassador to Indonesia regarding the possible agreement to transfer detainees or transfer offensive persons (TSP) between countries in a meeting aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between Indonesia and Iran in Jakarta, Friday, December 13.

"Currently, there are 59 Iranian citizens detained in Indonesia in connection with narcotics cases," Supratman said at the meeting as reported by ANTARA.

Until now, he said the Indonesian government was drafting an academic paper, which would later be used to prepare a Draft Law (RUU) on the Transfer of Prisoners between countries.

The Ministry of Law and Human Rights is studying carefully the legal mechanisms and politics that will be applied in the bill.

Currently, continued Supratman, the bill has been included in the list of the 2025-2029 National Legislation Program (Prolegnas).

He explained that the Indonesian government and the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) have agreed not to grant clemency or amnesty to various cases of extraordinary crimes, such as corruption, narcotics, and gross human rights violations (HAM).

"However, the final decision remains the right of the president with certain considerations," he said.

The Minister of Law and Human Rights also expressed his gratitude to Iran for supporting Indonesia to jointly fight transnational organized crime, by signing a Bilateral Agreement between Indonesia and Iran on Legal Aid in the Criminal Problem and the Bilateral Agreement between Indonesia and Iran on Extradition in 2016.

Supratman said the Islamic Republic of Iran as one of the countries in the Middle East has a strategic position.

The Minister of Law and Human Rights hopes that the cooperation relations between the two countries will be better and more stable, especially in the fields of law, energy, and technology.

"I believe that through cooperation in the legal field between the two countries, it can strengthen existing strategic relations, of course based on the rule of law," said Supratman.
