M 5.2 Earthquake Shakes Talaud Islands, North Sulawesi, No Tsunami Potential

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) detected an earthquake with a magnitude (M) of 5.2 rocked Talaud Islands Regency, North Sulawesi, Tuesday, December 10 at 14:13 WIT.

BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center Director Daryono said the epicenter of the earthquake was located at sea at a depth of 136 kilometers with coordinates 3.72 degrees Celsius; 127.84 degrees east longitude or 132 kilometers from the Southeast of Melonguane City, Talaud Islands.

This tectonic earthquake was felt for a while in most Talaud areas with an intensity scale of II-III MMI, such as the Nanusa, Damau, and Rainis areas.

Based on a temporary analysis of the BMKG seismological, the earthquake triggered by rock deformation on the Philippine Sea plate which was subducted under the Maluku Sea certainly did not have the potential for a tsunami.

As of 13.35 WIT, the results of BMKG monitoring have not shown any aftershock activity.
