List Of AFF Cup Champions From Time To Time, Also Name Transformation

JAKARTA - The Indonesian national team is again involved in the 2024 edition of the AFF Cup. The Garuda squad won the group's inaugural match on Monday, December 9, 2024, WIB night, against Myanmar with a narrow score of 1-0.

Asnawi Mangkualam Bahar became the hero of the Indonesian national team's victory through his goal in the 76th minute which was finally ratified as Zin Nyi Aung's own goal.

In the 2024 edition, the Indonesian national team entered Group B with Vietnam, Myanmar, the Philippines, and Laos. This involvement is also not the first time for the Garuda Squad.

Since its premiere in 1996, there have been 10 countries in Southeast Asia that have participated in this biennial competition, including the Indonesian national team.

From its inaugural event in 1996, the AFF Cup also often transformed the name of the tournament. This situation occurs based on the main sponsors who support this tournament.

When it was first held in 1996, this tournament was known as the Tiger Cup. The name was pinned based on cooperation that occurred with the main sponsor, Tiger Beer.

In 2007 the tournament renamed the Suzuki AFF Cup after getting sponsorship support from the Suzuki brand.

Then, in 2022, the name of the tournament will again be changed to the Mitsubishi Electric AFF Cup.

During its journey, the AFF Cup has given birth to several countries as champions. So far, the country with the most titles is Thailand, which has collected six trophies.

While behind Thailand, there are Singapore with four titles, Vietnam with three titles, and Malaysia with one title.

Unfortunately, even though they have participated from the start, the Indonesian national team has never won a title.

Until now, the best achievement of the Indonesian national team in the AFF Cup is as runners-up six times.

This situation actually made some football lovers call Indonesia a runner-up specialist in the biennial tournament in Southeast Asia.
