The southern Syrian insurgent movement began in 2012, when local activists formed a Syrian Liberation Army (FSA) group in Daraa.
The fighters initially controlled the city of Daraa, but the regime was then able to take it back.
Despite longstanding small-scale clashes between rebels in the southern region and regime forces, the uprising this Friday marked the first major turmoil in recent years.
So far, Assad regime forces have only fought on one front.
The main rebel attack began in northwestern Idlib province, but has since pushed Bashar al-Assad troops further south towards Damascus.
Currently, the Assad regime is facing a possible fight on two fronts, with major attacks in the north and new attacks gaining momentum in the south.
