Chancellor Scholz: Germany Is Ukraine's Strongest Supporter In Europe And Relyable

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Monday stressed his country would be Ukraine's strongest and reliable supporter, as he announced his trip to Kyiv and plans to announce military aid when he meets President Volodymr Zelensky.

"Ukraine can rely on us. We said what we did. And we did what we said," Chancellor Scholz tweeted on social media X, as quoted December 2.

"To clarify this, I traveled to Kyiv tonight by train, through a country that has defended itself from the Russian aggression war for more than 1,000 days," he continued.

In a separate post, Chancellor Scholz said he would meet President Zelensky in Kyiv, followed by the announcement of Germany's latest military assistance to Ukraine.

"I will announce an additional 650 million euros worth of weaponry to be delivered in December," he tweeted.

Die Ukraine kann sich auf uns verlassen. Wir sagen, was wir ton. Und wir ton, was wir sagen.

"Germany will remain Ukraine's strongest supporter in Europe," Chancellor Scholz said.

Citing Reuters, this visit will be the second for Chancellor Scholz since the Russian-Ukraine war broke out in 2022, reaffirming German support.

While launching Germany as Ukraine's second-largest arms supplier after the United States, Chancellor Scholz has repeatedly refused to send the Taurus cruise missile to Ukraine, fearing it could drag his country into direct conflict with Russia.

He also drew criticism from allies, including President Zelensky himself, for making phone calls with Russian President Vladimir Putin for the first time in nearly two years in November, which critics consider a target for domestic political gain.

In a post on Twitter Friday, President Zelensky said Chancellor Scholz shared details of his phone call with President Putin, as they made phone calls.

"I called Chancellor Olaf Scholz and thank you for Germany's leadership in supporting Ukraine, in particular to enhance our air defense capabilities with Patriot and IRIS-T, which have saved thousands of lives," President Zelensky tweeted.

"We discuss decisive joint steps - both bilateral and partner - that could further strengthen Ukraine's ability to defend itself. Increasing pressure on Russia and strengthening Ukraine's position in all lines is critical to forcing aggressors to achieve true peace," he added.
