Eight Ways To Don't Lose Against Empty Boxes In Pilkada, Politicians Must Know!

Political observer from Al Azhar Indonesia University Andriadi Achmad assessed that the phenomenon of losing a pair of regional head candidates against an empty box in the 2024 Pilkada was a hard slap for politicians, especially incumbent candidates or single candidates.

So that this incident does not happen again, Andriadi revealed several important messages for politicians.

First, politicians, especially incumbent candidates, must show real performance by prioritizing the interests of the people. Namely focusing on concrete programs that the community really feels the benefits of.

"Don't just rely on rhetoric or political promises. In addition, show transparency and accountability by opening up clear information spaces about achievements during the term of office. The public wants to see tangible results, not unilateral claims," Andriadi told VOI, Saturday, November 30.

Second, build good communication with the community or be close to the people. Don't just appear during the campaign period.

"Set yourself regularly in the community to listen directly to their aspirations and complaints. In addition, use effective media by maximizing social media, public meetings, and traditional media to reach various levels of society with clear and positive messages," he said.

Third, avoid transactional politics and don't just rely on money. Because voters are getting smarter and no longer easily influenced by money politics or material promises.

"Show leadership quality through vision, program, and track record. As well as focus on integrity by maintaining a good name and avoiding scandals that damage people's trust," he explained.

Fourth, increase healthy competition by opening space for alternative candidates. And do not dominate political parties that create single candidates are often considered to kill local democracy.

"Politition must encourage healthy competition to attract people's interest in the political process. In addition, collaboration with local figures involves community leaders, academics, or professionals to strengthen credibility and political networks," he said.

Fifth, conduct self-evaluation and introspection by studying defeat.

If you have lost against an empty box or see a similar trend, according to Andriadi, use evaluation as a lesson to improve yourself and redesign political strategies.

"Then, in-depth public research by understanding the needs, expectations, and unrest of the community through direct surveys or discussions, then making appropriate policies," he continued.

Sixth, be an inclusive leader by involving all groups and not only focus on certain support groups or political bases.

Embrace all elements of society, including those who have different views.

"In addition, focus on the diversity of programs by designing development programs that touch various sectors, such as economy, education, health, and infrastructure, to ensure that the benefits are felt evenly," he said.

Seventh, increase public confidence in political parties by recruiting qualified candidates.

In the party, it must be more selective in carrying out candidates, choosing individuals with a strong track record, competence, and integrity.

"Then, reduce the politics of oligarchs and not only carry candidates from the elite circle. Give opportunities to young cadres or independent figures who are able to attract people's sympathy," he said.

Eighth, be a visionary leader with a clear idea, where voters look for leaders with long-term vision that is relevant to regional conditions. Don't just focus on short-term populist projects.

"Furthermore, convey a positive narrative and don't rely on negative campaigns against political opponents. Convey a constructive, solution and inspiring narrative," he concluded.
