Participation Of Pilkada 2024 Voters Is Predicted To Be Low, Here's The Jakarta KPU's Explanation

JAKARTA The participation of voters in the 2024 Jakarta Governor and Deputy Governor Election (Pilgub) is predicted to be lower than the previous period.

The Jakarta Regional General Election Commission (KPUD) acknowledged that the voter flow at this year's polling stations (TPS) shows a downward trend in participation.

"According to our monitoring, the voter flow at the TPS is a bit low," said the chairman of the Jakarta KPUD, Wahyu Dinata, at a press conference on Thursday, November 28.

Although data is definitely not yet available, Wahyu said that historically, participation in the gubernatorial election tends to be lower than the Presidential Election (Pilpres).

"As an illustration, in 2007 and 2012 the participation rate was around 65%, while in 2017 it increased to 78%. Currently we are still recapitulating data for the 2024 Pilkada," he explained.

To anticipate the low level of participation, the Jakarta KPUD has carried out various socialization strategies. A member of the Jakarta KPUD, Astri Megatari, said that his party had involved various communities and community organizations at more than 100 points, including socialization to schools, campuses, sub-districts, as well as crowded places such as car free day, malls, and markets.

"Efforts to socialize and educate have been carried out optimally. However, we will evaluate the results of the voter participation rate on voting day for future improvements," said Astri.

A total of 8,214,007 people were recorded in the Jakarta Province permanent voter list (DPT). However, the Jakarta KPUD emphasized that the exact number of voters and the final results of the 2024 Pilkada are still waiting for the tiered recapitulation process to determine the elected governor and deputy governor.

Wahyu added, although participation tends to be low, the Jakarta KPUD continues to strive to increase public awareness of the importance of exercising voting rights. A comprehensive evaluation will be carried out to deal with future elections.

"We hope that the results of this evaluation can be the basis for formulating a more effective strategy, so that voter participation can increase in the future," Wahyu concluded.
