Faisal Assegaf: Prabowo Must Be A General In The Palestinian Case
JAKARTA - Middle Eastern observer Faisal Assegaf praised President Prabowo Subianto's desire to evacuate a thousand war victims in Gaza, Palestine. When realized, Faisal assessed that Prabowo had made extraordinary breakthroughs to support Palestine.
He (Prabowo) made a discourse that I think is practical. It's a breakthrough because it will evacuate a thousand patients from Gaza. That's indeed a very interesting discourse," said Faisal on the EdShareOn podcast with host Eddy Wijaya, which aired on Wednesday, November 27, 2024.
According to Faisal, Prabowo's attention to the victims of war in Gaza, Palestine, is very meaningful in the midst of the condition of the people who continue to be oppressed. What's more, continued Faisal, if Prabowo dares to visit the country nicknamed the Cretaceous Stone Country. For the record, until now no Indonesian president has set foot on Palestine. I hope that Prabowo will come to pick up the thousand patients directly," he said.
The discourse of evacuating a thousand war victims in Gaza has actually been raised by Prabowo since serving as Minister of Defense. In fact, he also wanted to send peacekeepers to Palestine to guard the victims. However, the discourse continues to be echoed by the former Commander General of the Indonesian Army Special Forces Command (Danjen
The Kopassus was inaugurated as president. He further demonstrated this commitment by submitting it again in a bilateral meeting with the Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) Ant Totalio Guterres at the Hilton Rio Hotel de Janeiro Copakabana, Brazil, last November 17.
Faisal explained that Prabowo needs to come to Palestine while at the same time showing the world that Indonesia is a former colony country, which is now strongly committed to an anti-invader world. This is also important to show his attitude as a general, and Kopassus (former Danjen). He can see the example of his father-in-law (President Suharto) who while on duty at Kostrad once came to war areas in Bosnia," he said.
Nevertheless, said Faisal, Prabowo's visit certainly had a major effect on Indonesia's relations with countries that support Israel like the United States (US). Indonesia will be considered brave Palestine Only for the Land ofhayalan? To Eddy Wijaya, Faisal Assegaf revealed that he had written a thesis about Palestine as a fantasy country. This opinion refers to the condition of Palestine, which has been in conflict for decades without a real solution. I wrote in 2008 in my thesis proposal that Palestine is an imaginary country, and until now I still believe there will be no Palestinian state, he said.
Faisal explained that the United Nations (UN) could not provide a solution to establish a Palestinian state in its entirety. In fact, they want Palestine to be divided into two countries with Israel. Even the area is shrinking. At the resolution of the 1947 partition, Faisal continued, the United Nations agreed that Palestine would get a 45 percent share of the region, while Israel is 52 percent. Now Palestine only gets 22 percent of the territory. The measure is very far from 45 percent that was previously approved," he said.
In addition to getting narrower, Faisal added, the UN's desire to divide the Palestinian territories is a foreign solution that is not born from the aspirations of the Palestinian people. "As an analogy like this, when we are being colonized, then there are foreigners gathering. Suddenly, they set the division of the area where we live. That's strange," he said.
Another factor that reinforces Faisal's opinion is the leadership of Mahmoud Abbas which violates democratic principles. Abbas, who replaced the late President Yasser Arafat in January 2005, should have led for 4 years. However, until now Palestine has not held the General Election (Pemilu) of the president to replace Abbas. And when the survey was conducted, 80 percent of the Palestinian people wanted Abbas to resign. He is no longer liked, let alone corrupt," he said.
Therefore, Faisal hopes that world leaders and people, including Indonesia, will help Palestine realize its dream of becoming an independent country. To realize Palestinian dreams, it takes solidarity, courage, honesty, and breakthroughs from the leaders of the country as a decision maker," said Faisal. But, I see that no country dares to do that. They are all struggling for their own national interests, which must be at a different level with the Palestinian issue. Therefore, Palestine for me is just an imaginary country," he said.
