Work While Standing Too Long Can Trigger High Blood Pressure
JAKARTA - The standing desk is now becoming more popular as a way to reduce the health impact due to sitting too long. However, recent research shows that standing for a long time without rest can also carry health risks, one of which is high blood pressure.
According to a report from Medical Daily, a new study warning that standing in a long duration could negatively affect blood pressure.
Research conducted by a team from the University of Turku involved 156 workers approaching retirement age. Their physical activity is monitored using an accelerometer mounted on the thigh.
The researchers monitored participants' blood pressure using a portable device that took measurements every 30 minutes for a full day. Activities such as standing, light to moderate physical activity, and quiescent time (dependent) were recorded during working hours, free time, and weekends.
Monitoring blood pressure for 24 hours provides a more accurate picture of how blood pressure affects the heart and blood vessels all the time. Blood pressure that tends to be higher during the day and does not drop adequately at night can cause blood vessel hardening, so the heart must work harder. In the long term, this condition can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, "explained Jooa Norha, one of the researchers, as quoted by Antara.
The analytical results show that standing for too long can lead to increased blood pressure. The researchers explained that the body reacts by increasing blood circulation to the lower leg area. However, this process is also accompanied by narrowing of blood vessels and increased heart work.
Working on standing does offer an alternative to the constantly sitting position in the office, but standing for a long time also has the potential to endanger health. It is recommended to take a break, such as walking for a while or sitting back every half an hour," said Norha.

The study also highlights that although work involving sitting lots does not always increase blood pressure, lack of physical activity outside of working hours can affect overall health.
It is important not only to be active while working, but also to ensure that there is sufficient physical activity in your spare time. Regular exercise can help maintain body fitness, so that workload is easier to handle. For those who have a decent work, ensuring that you move outside of work hours is very important," concluded Norha.
