Prabowo's Ambition To Target EBT Generation To 75 GW, METI Gives Important Notes

JAKARTA - The Head of ESDM Apindo as well as Chair IV of the Indonesian Renewable Energy Society (METI) has opened their voices regarding the government's move to increase the target of green power plants by 75 GW by 2040.

Eka said he appreciated the government's steps to increase the capacity of power plants in the next 15 years. This can also be a medium for promoting Indonesia to the world's mat that Indonesia has great potential in the EBT electricity sector.

"Hashim also said that Indonesia's potential has 3800 GW potentials whose use is still very small, only 13 GW or only 0.03 percent for our electricity. If we can use it, the potential for green energy, FDI, domestic industry and employment is very large," he said in Energy CORner quoted Thursday, November 21.

Not only that, with the addition of these plants, Indonesia can increase the portion of clean electricity exports to neighboring countries

However, as a field player, Eka assessed that the government is very ambitious in setting this target. The reason is that until now only 13 GWs of clean energy have been utilized. Meanwhile, the energy mix target in 2024 is set at 17 percent and has only reached 13 percent.

"We have a target of 2025, which is 25 percent but revised to 23 percent and recently revised to 17 percent. The issue is not easy because the investment butun is big," explained Eka.

Eka said that Indonesia in order to make this happen requires at least 200 billion US dollars or equivalent to Rp. 2,000 trillion.

"Not to mention that the infrastructure is not adequate," added Eka.

For this reason, he said, until now Indonesia still relies heavily on fossil fuels because it has adequate infrastructure and is supported by subsidies and compensation from the government.

"We welcome it. Ambitious but large efforts are needed," said Eka.
