Confirming Waste Problems, Minister Of Environment Will Summon Yogyakarta City Government
JAKARTA - Minister of Environment/Head of the Environmental Control Agency (BPLH) Hanif Faisol Nurofiq stated that he would summon the Yogyakarta City Government to explain the management of waste in the area.
"I will summon the Yogyakarta City Government to ask for a detailed explanation regarding the management of this waste," said Hanif Faisol in a written statement in Yogyakarta, Monday.
During a surprise inspection (sidak) at the Temporary Disposal Site (TPS) or Depo Mandala Krida, Yogyakarta City, Monday morning, Hanif said that the management was chaotic and had caused environmental pollution.
This situation, according to him, reflects the local government's lack of seriousness in dealing with the waste problem in the Student City.
"This pollutes the environment. With a capacity of 300 tons per day, where does the garbage from here throw it? There must be someone responsible for this condition," he said.

If it is proven that there is a violation in the waste management, he ensures that he will take firm action legally.
"If it is proven that there is a violation, I will drag the guilty party to legal action in accordance with Law Number 18 of 2008," said Hanif.
He understands that the waste problem in Gudeg City emerged after Piyungan Final Processing Site (TPA), Bantul closed in April 2024.
Hanif also asked local governments, both city/district and provincial levels, to immediately find concrete solutions to deal with the waste problem.
"I am disappointed to see this situation. Local governments should not allow garbage to pile up like this," he said.
According to him, with a budget of only Rp. 100 billion, it will not be enough to handle waste in Yogyakarta.
"If the upstream management is not serious, the waste will definitely continue to accumulate in the TPA," he said.
He promised to send a team of investigators and environmental supervisors to investigate the waste problem. In addition, he ensured that law enforcement measures would be taken against parties who proved negligent.
"I will not resign from law enforcement. There must be a suspect so that the community gets a sense of justice," he said.
Hanif also suggested that local governments learn from other regions that are successful in waste management, such as Surabaya and Banyumas.
"If the upstream management is carried out properly, the waste will not accumulate in the TPA. Handling must start from the source," he said.
As a concrete step, Hanif asked all levels of the Ministry of Environment to immediately find solutions to waste problems in Yogyakarta.
"I ask the relevant director to immediately find a solution. Law enforcement is still being carried out, but technical assistance and funding must also be considered," he said.
