JAKARTA - A hit-and-run attack in a sports center in the southern Chinese city of Zhuhai killed 35 people and injured 43 people.

The incident occurred at 19.48 p.m. local time on Monday, November 11.

A small off-road vehicle was hit by a large group of people exercising outside the sports center.

Police Zhuhai said the suspect was a 62-year-old man surnamed Fan. The perpetrator is currently hospitalized after injuring himself with a knife in his car.

President Xi Jinping, as quoted by Chinese state television CCTV, ordered every effort to treat injured victims and demanded severe punishment for the perpetrators. The central government has sent a team to provide guidance on the handling of the case.

Violence crimes are rare in China due to strict security and strict gun laws. However, the growing reports of knife attacks in major cities have attracted public attention to safety in public spaces.
