Trump Wins Presidential Election, Tehran: We Have A Bitter Experience With US Governments In The Past

JAKARTA - The United States election is an opportunity to review the "misleading approach" of the United States Government, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said on Thursday, according to state media, after Donald Trump won the presidency.

The return of former President Donald Trump to the White House could mean imposing tougher US oil sanctions on Iran, which he began in 2018 after leaving the 2015 Nuclear Deal between Tehran and global powers.

"We have had bitter experiences with various policies and approaches of the US government in the past. Elections are an opportunity to review past wrong approaches," Baghaei said.

Earlier, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said in September Tehran was ready to end its nuclear deadlock with the West, which accused him of seeking capacity to develop nuclear weapons. Iran says its nuclear program is only for peaceful purposes.

President Joe Biden, who will step down, is seeking to revive the nuclear deal with Iran in negotiations but failed to reach a new deal. Meanwhile, Trump has not yet explained whether he will reopen the matter.

"What matters to Iran is how we evaluate the actions of the US Government," said Baghaei.
