Speaking With Donald Trump, President Zelensky: Strong US Leadership Is Important To The World
JAKARTA - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Wednesday he spoke with US elected president Donald Trump and congratulated him after winning Uncle Sam's country election.
Trump, who is paired with JD Vance and promoted by the Republican Party, managed to outperform his Democratic rival, incumbent vice president Kamala Harris and her partner Tim Walz in Tuesday's vote.
"We agreed to maintain close dialogue and advance our cooperation. Strong and steadfast US leadership is very important to the world and to fair peace," President Zelensky sincerely wrote in a post on X.
Citing The Kyiv Independent, the two figures did not provide additional details about the call.
Trump is known to have constantly criticized the Ukrainian president during his campaign. He previously blamed US President Zelensky and incumbent President Joe Biden for Russia's invasion of Ukraine without naming Putin, and called President Zelensky a "seller" for securing what Trump considered too much military aid.
Earlier, President Zelensky in his congratulations on social media as soon as the election results voiced hope for "strong bipartisan support for Ukraine in the United States."
In his evening address, President Volodymyr Zelensky reiterated his appreciation for the United States' strong support for Ukraine during the full-scale war, hoping President-elect Donald Trump would maintain strong ties with the country he is struggling with.
"In terms of defense, economy, and the future after the war we have the potential for stronger cooperation," President Zelensky said.
"This is what will make Ukraine, America, and the whole free world more successful," he said.
Despite past tensions, Zelensky has been working to improve relations, visiting Trump in New York last September, during a campaign to share Ukraine's five-point winning plan with Republican candidates.
During the meeting, he invited Trump to visit Ukraine, and Trump accepted the invitation even though such a visit had not yet occurred.
