Winky Wiryawan Wants To Retire As A DJ After Reaching 50 Years Of Work

JAKARTA - Winky Wiryawan has known electronic music since he was a teenager. For 30 years, he has never stopped playing music as a disjoki (DJ). The 45-year-old man can even be said to be an icon of Indonesian electronic music today.

Winky's journey as a DJ for 30 years is certainly very long. Various clubs in big cities of Indonesia and many electronic music festivals have become a stage to show their dedication to the music genre.

When asked how long he will continue to be a DJ and appear regular, Winky made sure he didn't want to stop in the near future.

The man who has been nominated for the AMI Awards twice said he will still be a DJ for a long time, at least up to 50 years of work.

"The plan is for 50 years (to work) I will retire as a DJ," said Winky Wiryawan during a press conference in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, Thursday, October 31.

Winky believes that getting older with the condition of the body that is no longer as healthy as when he was young, is the basis for his consideration for retiring.

Especially for a DJ, appearing in front of an energetic audience is not an easy matter at all. A DJ is required to appear full of energy in every appearance.

When it has reached 50 years of work, it does not mean Winky has completely disappeared from the world of electronic music. He believes it is necessary to be more selective in accepting gig offers.

"The age has increased, yes, now God has given it to me at the age of 46, yes, in 50 years of work, we plan to have a tour. Yes, I will limit it later, I will be the one who is picky. I'll just make the tour later," said Winky.

"So I think, when we have worked for 50 years, we just want to play what we like," he added.

For information, Winky Wiryawan commemorated his 30 years of musical travel through a show titled Rhythm Odyssey which will be held at H, Sudirman Central Business District (SCBD, South Jakarta on November 23.

Winky will feature a setlist depicting his journey through the world of electronic music since 1994.

He did not appear alone, there will be several collaborators who will participate in celebrating the event, namely Kenny Gabriel, Sara Fajira, Audrey & Aqi Singgih, Maruli Tampubolon, Lukman Sardi, Attila Syah, and Prince Husein. In addition, a series of Indonesian DJs will also participate, such as Evan Virgan, Osvaldo Nugroho, Herdy, and fire.
