BKKPN-BRIN-Undip Calculates Gili Trawangan Ecosystem Damage Due To Sea Water Pipes PT TCN

NTB - Kupang National Water Conservation Area Center (BKKPN) calculated the losses from the damage to the marine ecosystem in Gili Trawangan due to drilling of a sea water distillation pipeline belonging to PT Tiara Cipta Nirwana (TCN).

In this activity, BKKPN collaborated with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) and professors of Diponegoro University (Undip).

"So, we are working with experts from BRIN and professors from Undip to calculate the economic value (losses) of coral reefs damaged by the drilling," said BKKPN Kupang Coordinator for the Gili Trawangan, Meno, and Air Working Area (Teramina) Martanina in Mataram, NTB, Thursday, October 31, confiscated by Antara.

The results of the calculation will then be followed up in the internal discussion plan on November 5, 2024.

"After the discussion, we will submit the results to PSDKP (Supervision of Marine Resources and Fisheries) which will later apply administrative sanctions to PT TCN," he said.

This administrative sanction will take the form of rehabilitation of coral reef damage, starting from cleaning up mud deposits with a distribution area of 2,364 square meters according to the results of the BKKPN investigation to the restoration of damaged coral reefs.

Martanina again conveyed that the revocation of PT TCN's operational permit by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) was in accordance with the procedure, one of which was to consider the results of the Kupang BKKPN investigation.

The BKKPN in an investigation that was carried out since early May 2024 found that the installation point for the sea water collection pipeline in Gili Trawangan waters was outside the approval of the permit.

Then the BKKPN found that there was a conversion of the sea water collection pipe into waste disposal.

In addition, waste wasted has also entered a conservation area that is contrary to the Regulation of the Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Number 31 of 2020.

The impact of PT TCN's activities has also made the quality of marine ecosystems in Gili Trawangan waters decrease. From the comparison of data on December 8, 2024, to May 8, 2024, the abundance of coral fish decreased by 75 percent.

This decline was due to the sedimentation of mud from PT TCN's pipeline drilling activities which had covered coral reefs to an area of tens of are.

Martanina ensured that the revocation of the permit was part of the KKP's seriousness in taking firm action against violations in marine conservation areas.
