MAKI Calls OTT Like Hunting At The Zoo, Supports KPK Focusing On Large Cases

JAKARTA - The Indonesian Anti-Corruption Society (MAKI) supports the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to investigate allegations of greater corruption by methods of building cases or case buildings. The institution is said to have to imitate the more progressive Attorney General's Office (AGO).

"OTT only creates evidence, namely by targeting people to bribe. So if it doesn't become a bribe, it doesn't happen, and the KPK has failed several times OTT. I know exactly, because the person doesn't give or lose track," MAKI Coordinator Boyamin Saiman told reporters, Saturday, October 26.

"So (OTT, red) this is called hunting in a zoo. It must have been found because it targets people by tapping and the results are small," he continued.

Boyamin said the KPK should not be complacent by only arresting hands. Meanwhile, on the other hand, the Attorney General's Office handled a number of corruption cases with state losses reaching hundreds of trillions.

"The AGO with the method of building a cassus can expose Jiwasraya's corruption up to Rp20 trillion, Asabri up to Rp18 trillion, rare and expensive cooking oil up to Rp5 trillion, then oil palm plantations up to trillions, finally lead up to Rp300 trillion, but especially Rp27 trillion," he explained.

"This means that the KPK should be ashamed to see the AGO like that. Even though the KPK should supervise the Attorney General's Office, the Attorney General's Office is even greater. So this is what I think the KPK's position must be (to carry out case building, ed)," said Boyamin.

Previously reported, the KPK emphasized that cases that caused state losses were its focus at this time. The goal is that the rescue of assets from corrupt practices can be maximized in the future.

"The KPK is currently focusing on handling the case, not shifting, yes, but we are focusing on case building that focuses on big state losses," said KPK Spokesperson Tessa Mahardika to reporters in a broadcast "Ask Spokesperson" on the KPK Instagram account, Friday, October 25.

Tessa did not deny that the KPK was famous for its hand arrest operation (OTT) which succeeded in ensnaring many perpetrators of corruption. However, his institution now wants to save more state finances.

"Arrest hands tend to be easy, yes, there is information, there is a recipient, there is evidence immediately caught complete. Well, in the long term of course, we want a bigger asset rescue," said the spokesman with the investigator's background.

"Procurement processes that are of a nature or of course up to trillions in number, and this is not possible or the handling is no longer a arrest," continued Tessa.
