Gangster's Life Sentence To Killing Hotel Owner In India Suspended As Long As He Pays Guarantee

JAKARTA - The High Court (PT) seen an appeal against a gangster member in India named Chhota Rajan in the 2001 murder case of a hotel owner in Mumbai.

Hindustantimes reported that Wednesday, October 23, Rajan's appeal attempt to make a life sentence for the murder of the hotel owner who ensnared him was suspended.

The Panel of Judges of PT Kalimantan, Revati Mohite Dere and Prithviraj Chavan ordered the defendant Rajan to pay a security deposit of 1 euro or IDR 18.5 million as a condition because his appeal was received.

In May 2023, the Special Court sentenced the defendant Chhota Rajan to life imprisonment in the murder case of the hotel owner.

Rajan, who was dissatisfied with his verdict, then filed an appeal to PT Juli.

In this case, hotel owner Jaya Shetty was shot dead by two suspected members of the Chhota Rajan gang. The murder took place on the hotel's first floor on May 4, 2001.

Based on the investigation, before the murder, Jaya Shetty received a call for extortion from Hemant Pujari, a member of the Chhota Rajan gang. Because she did not pay the requested money, Shetty was killed.

Although life imprisonment in this case was suspended, Rajan served a sentence in another legal case.

Rajan was proven to have killed veteran criminal reporter J Dey with a life sentence. Rajan is currently being held in a Tihar prison in Delhi.

Last year, a special court of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) acquitted Chhota Rajan of charges of mastermind killing the famous Mumbai trade union leader, Dr. Datta Samant, who was shot dead in 1997.
