IAC 2024 Highlights The Problems Of Puing-Puing Antariksa
JAKARTA During the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) held in Milan, Italy, a number of countries gathered to discuss important issues related to outer space. One of the issues discussed is space debris.
Over the past year, space agencies from various countries have highlighted the increasing amount of orbital debris. This collection of debris that is becoming trash needs to be taken seriously because astronauts and the surrounding technology can be affected.
Therefore, the 2024 IAC brings mitigation and recovery topics of debris with the theme Space Responsible for Sustainability. Through this theme, experts from state sharing gather to discuss situational awareness in space.
In addition to sharing views on finding solutions to clean up active debris and preventing collisions in space, researchers were also present to share their findings. There is a special presentation to discuss debris detection systems and policies related to the object.
Marlon Sorge, Executive Director of the Aerospace Corporation Center for Orbital and Reentry Debris Studies (CORGS), told Spacenews that the issue of space debris needs to be discussed. The reason is, there are more spacecraft that will be launched in the future.

"We are talking at a detailed technical level," said Sorge. "We want to understand how to control the debris problem but not hinder all the amazing things that are happening (in the space sector)."
Sorge explained that national and international organizations and institutions have different views and goals about debris mitigation. However, this view can still be unified because the physics is the same.
"One of the things we, Aerospace, try to focus on is inviting people at the technical level to talk to each other," said Sorge. "We need to talk to each other systematically and systematically try to move forward."
