Novel Baswedan: I Am Concerned About Seeing The Selection Of KPK Capims

JAKARTA - Former KPK Senior Investigator Novel Baswedan expressed his concern in the selection of candidates for the leadership of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). According to Novel, the selection of KPK candidates does not consider a number of important problems such as violations of the code of ethics of the candidates, so it is feared that it will affect the credibility of the KPK in the future.

"For example, there are KPK leaders (Currently as Capim) who have been examined for ethical violations (but can still pass the selection)," Novel said in the EdShareOn podcast with host Eddy Wijaya, which aired on Wednesday, October 16, 2024.

Of the 230 KPK candidates, there were two KPK leaders for the 2019-2024 period who passed until the last 20, namely Nurul Ghufron and Johanis Tanak. But in the end, Johanis Tanak entered the top 10. Both of them had drawn the spotlight because they had been questioned by the KPK Supervisory Board for allegedly violating ethics.

Gufron was under moderate ethical sanctions because he was proven to have used influence in the mutation of an ASN at the Ministry of Agriculture when the KPK investigated the bribery case of former Minister of Agriculture Syahrul Yasin Limpo.

Meanwhile, Johanis Tanak related to his chat with ESDM Ministry official Muhammad Idris Froyoto Sihite when the KPK was also investigating the case at the institution. Although recently, the KPK Council declared Tanak not guilty.

Even though the decision is said to be unproven because the evidence is deleted, it shouldn't be considered as a problem. And the selection committee should ask the KPK, what are the facts? That way we will get complete input, "said Novel Baswedan highlighting the case of Johanis Tanak.

Novel, who is currently the Deputy Chair of the Special Task Force (Satgasus) for the Prevention of Corruption, stated that the results of the KPK selection were his concerns from the start, so he filed a lawsuit for the age limit of the KPK Capim and the provisions (Sela Decision) so that the selection of the KPK Capim was postponed to the Constitutional Court. But unfortunately, the Constitutional Court rejected the two requests.

"If one day we are asked, why is it that the KPK's condition is chaotic, we don't do anything to be able to help? We can say, we have made efforts, have struggled, and indeed the limits have reached a position where it is no longer possible to be able to do anything," Novel said.

Novel: Private Jet Kaesang Should Be Linked To State Administrators

To Eddy Wijaya, Novel Baswedan also responded to the spotlight on the use of private jets by the Chairman of the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI) Kaesang Pangarep and his wife Erina Gudono to the United States. According to him, the case of President Joko Widodo's youngest son must be linked to the background of the family profession, not just Kaesang's personal as an entrepreneur.

"If you look at Kaesang, he is a businessman, but the measurement is not from there. He must be measured from Kaesang, whose brother is the state administrator? That should be the case," Novel said. Because it is not allowed if there are officials, then through their children, there are facilities that are accepted, it is not allowed. It can be part of gratification," he added.

The man who was born in Semarang, June 22, 1977, then regretted the statement by KPK employees who immediately concluded that the case of the Kaesang private jet did not include gratification. Novel considered that further investigation from Kaesang's background as the son of a state administrator, in this case President Jokowi.

"There are several statements from the KPK, one of which is the Deputy for Prevention of the KPK who said that Kaesang is a private person, not a state administrator. I am confused, well, it seems that he does not understand gratification," he said.

Novel appealed to officials and their families to be more careful in receiving gifts and facilities from anyone. "Especially for the President's level, yes. The president is given facilities by the state. Even his family is also given facilities. So he should be even more careful. Cook, get facilities from other people?" he said.
