Literacy Culture Starts At Home, Understands The Importance Of Reading Habits With Children

JAKARTA - As parents, giving positive examples by getting used to reading with children can improve the literacy culture that starts at home.

The reason is, when children see their parents involved in reading, be it books, magazines, or articles, they will be inspired to do the same.

Therefore, providing various types of books and reading materials that are in accordance with children's interests is also very helpful in growing their curiosity and joy for literacy.

The importance of starting a literacy culture from home was also conveyed by Member of the Indonesian Parliament, Abdul Fikri Faqih. He said parents should be actively involved in building reading interests in children from an early age.

One of the steps he recommends is reading books near children and providing a variety of interesting reading materials at home.

"A simple, effective way is to set an example by reading in front of children. In addition, give children the freedom to express themselves and provide books that are interesting for them," he said as quoted by Antara.

According to Fikri, reading habits in the family environment can strengthen literacy culture and contribute to increasing reading interest in Indonesia.

He added, building a habit of reading from an early age has important benefits for children's development.

"By reading, children can develop imagination, creativity, and a better understanding of the world around them," he explained.

Efforts to increase literacy need to be carried out thoroughly, not only through schools, but also at home in parenting and various communities such as the Community Reading Park (TBM).

According to him, literacy includes reading, writing, listening, and responding effectively, all of which are important components in language skills.

Based on the latest recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), reading activities with children not only strengthen emotional relationships between parents and children, but also play an important role in brain development. AAP recommends that reading activities be carried out from birth to kindergarten age.
