MoneyGram Hacking Leaks Users' Personal Data, Including SSN And ID Photos

JAKARTA - The global money transfer service company, MoneyGram, experienced a hack that resulted in the theft of personal data from a number of users. This attack occurred between September 20 and 22, 2024, but MoneyGram only revealed this violation on September 27.

The stolen data includes names, contact numbers, addresses, date of birth, several Social Security numbers (SSN), as well as copies of official identification documents such as SIMs and other financial-related documents.

In its official statement, MoneyGram said that the hackers had succeeded in accessing data from a number of consumers, including transaction information such as date and number of remittances.

For some users, information on criminal investigations related to fraud has also been exposed. Even so, the company has not clearly disclosed the number of users affected by a total of 50 million customers in more than 200 countries.

MoneyGram immediately took action by disabling several of its systems and involving external cybersecurity experts to assist the investigation. The company is also working with law enforcement to follow up on the case.

MoneyGram offers credit protection and monitoring services from Exprian for free for two years for affected US customers.

Comcast Hacking Attack

In addition, a separate hacking attack also occurred on a debt collection company used by Comcast, a cable TV service giant. In February, Comcast initially stated that no customer data was stolen in the attack on Financial Business and Consumer Solutions (FBCS).

However, in July, Comcast admitted that more than 237,703 of its customers' personal data had been stolen, including names, addresses, Social Security numbers, date of birth, and Comcast account numbers.

To protect yourself from cyber threats, users are advised to always be careful of suspicious communications related to financial information. If you receive a call, message, or email related to financial matters, you should contact the company directly through an official number to ensure the validity of the information. Credit freezes can also be an option to prevent irresponsible parties from using personal data to carry out illegal financial activities.
