Russia Intercepts Ukrainian Drone Attack In Kursk, No Nuclear Power Plant Damage

JAKARTA - Russian troops intercepted Ukrainian drones near the Russian city of Kurchatov. There was no damage to the nearby Kursk nuclear power plant.

Governor Alexei Smirnov said debris from the drone caused a fire in a building unrelated to the factory on Thursday, October 3.

Several Russian Telegram channels previously reported alleged Ukrainian attacks, which they said had been thwarted by air defenses but resulted in fires a few miles from nuclear power plants.

The power plant operator, Rosenergoatom, said the facility was operating as usual and radiation levels remained within normal limits.

Reuters was unable to independently confirm the report.

Ukrainian troops entered the Kursk region in a cross-border surprise attack on August 6 and remained there even as the Russian military tried to expel them.

Rafael Grossi, head of the UN nuclear watchdog, visited the nuclear power plant on August 27.

Grossi said the power plant was very vulnerable to serious accidents because it did not have a protective dome that could protect it from missiles, drones, or artillery.
