JAKARTA - It was reported that 10 Vietnamese fishermen were injured after their boat was attacked by foreign vessels while catching fish near the Paracel Islands, the South China Sea claimed by China and Vietnam.

The attack took place on Sunday, September 29, the Thanh Nien newspaper reported, citing authorities in the central province of Quang Ngai.

Reported by Reuters, Tuesday, October 1, the report did not provide an explanation of the foreign vessel or how the fishing vessel was attacked.

Three fishermen suffered broken legs and arms as a result of the attack, the report said, citing Nguyen Thanh Bien, captain of the QNg 957.39 TS fishing vessel.

The ship carrying the 10 fishermen departed from the port in the province on September 13.

Vietnam and China's foreign ministries did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. Vietnamese authorities are investigating the incident.

The Chinese-controlled Paracel, known as Hoang Sa in Vietnam, is located in the South China Sea, a busy global maritime waterway and is almost entirely claimed by China.
