Heavy Rain Paralyzes Mumbai India, 4 People Die

JAKARTA - Heavy rains hit Mumbai, India, triggering flooding and killing four people and crippling the city and forcing schools to close.

Some areas of Mumbai recorded rainfall of about 275 mm (11 inches) on Wednesday, September 25 evening, which paralyzed highway traffic and delayed trains used by millions of city residents every day.

Four people died as a result of incidents related to rain, officials were quoted as saying by Reuters on Thursday, September 26.

It is expected that it will rain again, the authorities issued red warnings throughout the city, and urged residents to stay at home. Schools and colleges were closed and fishermen were asked to stay away from the beach until Friday, September 27.

Footage of drones posted on social media shows a busy highway filled with cars - some of the drivers are still inside, others left by frustrated drivers. Hundreds of thousands of passengers spent hours on the road.

Muson showers in India began to ease from northwest of the country earlier this week, nearly a week later than usual, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

The rainy season generally started in June and began to subside in mid-September, but the rain continued this year, which has helped replenish reservoirs but damaged crops in several states.

Heavy rains are also expected in parts of the southern part of the state of Telenka on Thursday, the weather office said.
