Draw Against Indonesia Makes Graham Arnold Leave The Australian Coach Chair

JAKARTA - Australia's draw when they met the Indonesian national team in the second match of the 2026 World Cup Qualification Third Round turned out to have a bitter tail on Graham Arnold. The 61-year-old coach finally chose to leave his post as coach of Socceroos.

"I said after the match against Indonesia that I had to make some decisions. After thinking deeply, my instincts say that this is the time to change, both for myself and for this program," said Graham Arnold, quoted from the official Socceroos website, Friday, September 20, 2024.

Graham arrest started his adventure with The Socceroos in 2018. However, after reaping a 0-1 defeat to Bahrain and a 0-0 draw over Indonesia in Group C of the Third Round of 2026 World Cup Qualifiers, he decided to withdraw.

On paper, Australia should be able to beat Bahrain and Indonesia. However, in reality Socceroos is now slumped in the standings by being in fifth position, which in fact is below Indonesia.

This condition makes Australia in a difficult position. The reason is, Australia will still face strong teams such as Japan and Saudi Arabia.

"I have made the decision to resign based on what is best for Australian countries, players and football."

"I have given everything I can for this role. I am very proud of what has been achieved during my tenure," said Arnold.

His tenure, which began in 2018, made Arnold the longest coach in Australian history.

Previously, during his 40 years career in Australian football, Arnold had been an assistant coach and caretaker, including being an Australian U-23 coach.

"Leading the Australian national team is the pinnacle of my career and an honor. I am very proud of our achievements, ranging from breaking records to fostering new talent, and making history on the global stage."

"After careful consideration, I believe it is time for a new leadership to guide the team more advanced."

"I have served 40 years for Australian football. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to all parties, who have been a part of this journey over the past six years."

"I wish this extraordinary team and support staff success in qualifying for this World Cup," he said.
